Learning requires experience and making some mistakes, but how do you do that while learning to aid in medical emergencies?
Medical Urgencies Technician (TUM) students often go through their training longing for the moment when they can “really learn in the ambulance” and struggle through theory and spoken simulations.
Red Cross is an international organization that depends on donations. Their students often have to buy their own materials to practice, and medical equipment acquired for instructional purposes is often expensive and wears out fast.
Achieve meaningful and purposeful learning by contextualizing it.
Allow them to make their own mistakes, notice them from the context, and learn by rectifying them.
Aid in the simultaneous development of multiple competencies that they need to excel in.
Using VR we can bring the real life experience closer, to the learning experience. Improving engagement, learning transfer, retention of information, simultaneous development of multiple competencies, and real time feedback and instruction.
A project that continues living as a social service opportunity for other students. It has the potential to grow beyond that.

Implementation in 16 Moodle Courses
Video and Text Tutorials for Future Implementation
The courses were lists of assignments and tables of content created by a team of faculty members in Moodle.
The faculty needs to be able to create and modify a course with little to no training.
The students are mainly over 40 years old and first time online students.
The team has limited knowledge of how the platform (Moodle) could be used.
Guide the students through the experience as a process.
Reflect and support the institution's educational philosophy.
Extend the instructional design from the content to the medium.
Make it easy for the faculty to modify and edit.
Turning the content into an experience, we created a process that the student can follow easily. They are more sure of their location, aware of their goals, and feel free to have a good learning experience. The content and resources that previously were all text and links needed to be differentiated to make it easy to read and navigate. We created an icon library to make the experience more visual and engaging.
16 online courses running.
Video and text tutorials for students and faculty.
Students and Faculty commenting positively on the usability of the courses, comparing them favorably with other courses they have experienced, and asking why other courses do not use the same design.

Successful redesign that improves the user experience
The fiscal records application was going to be unified with several applications into a new singular administrative web application. It also needed to be updated regarding technology and user interface. It needed to follow new government regulations, and use the current ellucian design system.
The team had multiple questions about functionality, usability, and user experience. There was a need to quickly gather all the knowledge and experience around this application that the team members, clients, users, and other experts had. We knew all the information was available, but needed a quick way to gather it and turn it into good design decisions.
Improve Fiscal Records' user experience by matching user needs, workflows, and mental models. Avoiding major changes on backend structure and functionality. Ensuring consistency with the other applications that will coexist in the same administrative application.
Running a design sprint with a multidisciplinary internal expert team and more five external guest expert users. In just 5 days the team was able to set a goal, define and answer key questions, map the user experience, define specific targets, ideate solutions, and test everything with users.
Design decisions based on expert knowledge and a user tested prototype. The team was able to deliver a new application with major changes that not just fitted the user needs, but also improved the user experience.
Hi, ever wish things were clear and simple for you and your users?

Great things tend to be beautifully complex. Sometimes that makes them difficult to work with. But we don’t need to get tangled in that complexity. We can work to make communication clear, interaction smooth, and meet our goals.

February 2021 - now
As a part of the UX Strategy Team I work facilitating and co-facilitating Design Thinking workshops, Design Sprints and other similar meetings that help other cross-functional teams to observe customers, identify problems, ideate solutions, and quickly validate those ideas. I also work with R&D teams designing the experience for their specific products, following the company's design system, and ensuring quality and consistency.
August 2019 - December 2020
Worked on the product PowerCampus using their design system. In an agile scrum framework. We analyzed the requirements with the PM and BA to ensure the UX quality.
May 2019 - May 2020
16 courses redesign. Worked with faculty and graduate students. User research, UX and UI design, and Moodle implementation.
January 2019 - now
I work with emergency technicians (instructors, veterans, and students) on an ongoing Social Service project that I lead. We collaborate with students each semester to develop technological solutions that help improve the learning experiences of the people that are trained at the organization. The project started as a VR simulator and now includes efforts to develop mobile and desktop applications as well.
